Slipper Lobster

(Scyllaridae)

When I was a kid, my family used to go to a Chinese restaurant that specialized in serving live seafood. Every visit was a highlight of the week, or the month, as circumstances dictated. Staring at the tanks of live grouper, eels, shrimp, mantis, rock lobster, mollusks, crab; it was a diverse bounty of tropical critters found off the coasts of the Philippines. I would sit there fascinated by the alien, and at times disturbing, mouths of crustaceans; the spitting manila clams; the writhing, intertwined mass of eels.

One day I noticed a creature I had never seen before. It looked like spiny lobster that had been flattened like a pancake. Its body protected by antediluvian armor plates, I was struck by a pair of uncommonly long antennae emerging from its mouth and another pair of flat, paddle-like ones a bit lower. I grabbed my father and pointed at it. It was delicious.

A few years later, at about 20 meters at the Sepok dive site, I shined my flashlight into a niche in the wall of living coral in front of me. And there I saw, protruding from a flattened face, a pair of long antennae, slightly tipped with purple. I immediately recognized my old friend from the restaurant. But now I knew its name, Scyllaridae, or the Slipper lobster. Kind of rare at this depth, I gave it a wave with my hand and continued my journey on the reef.
