Flowery Flounder

(Bothus mancus)

We were diving pretty shallow - maybe about 10 meters - near Beatrize rock. A nondescript coral formation - pretty bare - truth be told. Then I noticed some slight discrepancies in the mottled surface of the coral. There were fine filaments that looked like fins outlining the shape of a flat fish. The camouflage was almost perfect, almost. Dirty, sandy tans, algae greens, and brown spots. As I got closer, I could see round white spots, outlined in green.

The same animal on different terrain.

And now, the fish-shaped spot on the coral began to pulsate. A swish of my hand pushed a small current onto the spot and the creature moved off of the formation, diving deeper. Its cryptic coloration began to change wildly as it moved over varied terrain. I watched in stillness as it then settled onto a lower part of the reef and seemed to disappear into the underlying coral - once again a near perfect match. I marveled at the Peacock flounder - one of my favorite vertebrates on the reef!
